SouthernDefenders unequivocally condemns ZEC’s Arbitrary Decision to Deny Accreditation to SouthernDefenders and other Local and International Election Observers.

The Southern Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (SouthernDefenders) strongly condemns the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s (ZEC) decision to deny accreditation to our organization, effectively preventing us from fulfilling our crucial role in observing the 23 August 2023 Harmonised Elections. SouthernDefenders also notes that other reputable local human rights defenders (HRDs) such as Tapiwa Chiriga, Arnold Tsunga, Rashid Mahiya, Dr Musa Kika, Rachel B Kadau and more were also unjustly denied accreditation to observe the election. This decision to deny accreditation comes as a surprise after SouthernDefenders had recently successfully deployed an observation mission in the recent by-elections that were held on 26 March 2022. As advocates for transparency, accountability, and the democratic process, we view this decision as a direct affront to the principles of fairness and openness that are fundamental to any democratic society. The refusal of accreditation these reputable and impartial observer groups and individuals without giving any valid or comprehensive reasoning, raises serious concerns about the transparency, fairness and integrity of the electoral process in Zimbabwe.
Election observation serves as a cornerstone of transparent and credible elections, fostering public trust in the electoral process and upholding the rights of citizens to participate in their governance. The presence of both local and international observers is in line with international standards and is crucial for promoting democratic values and ensuring transparency and credibility of elections. These observers play a pivotal role in monitoring the electoral proceedings, assessing the adherence to the established guidelines, and reporting any irregularities or malpractices that could undermine the legitimacy of the results.
The refusal to accredit these HRDs and human rights organizations such as SouthernDefenders, without any substantiated rationale, does not only undermine the credibility of the electoral process but also raises suspicions of potential misconduct and manipulation. Transparent and accountable electoral processes are essential for upholding the principles of democracy, protecting citizen’s rights to participate in free and fair elections, as well as fostering public trust in the democratic institutions of Zimbabwe.
In the spirit of democracy, transparency, and inclusivity, we urge the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to swiftly reconsider its decision and grant accreditation to SouthernDefenders and other affected local observers. By doing so, the ZEC could demonstrate its commitment to openness, inclusivity, and a genuinely democratic electoral process. We call upon all relevant authorities to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in a transparent, fair, and just manner, allowing the people of Zimbabwe to exercise their democratic rights without any hindrance or manipulation.
